All bachelor’s and master’s students of the University of Tartu are invited to apply for the ENLIGHT Inclusion and Sustainability Awards to be presented at the Teaching and Learning Conference in Uppsala on 8–10 October 2025. The awards acknowledge students who have demonstrated dedication to promoting diversity, inclusion, accessibility and sustainability through their projects, initiatives or research.

Indrek Seire and Jaan Vihalemm ranked in top five on 19 February in the final competition of “Science in 3 Minutes” organised by the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

Today, at the ceremony and concert dedicated to the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia in the University of Tartu assembly hall, the Peeter Tulviste memorial fund prize, the Ernst Jaakson memorial fund scholarship and the Lennart Meri award for research and for master’s thesis were presented.

On 21 February, the Peeter Tulviste memorial fund prize was presented at the ceremony marking the Republic of Estonia’s anniversary at the University of Tartu. The 5,000-euro prize was awarded to Research Fellow in Theoretical Philosophy Uku Tooming, whose research focuses on understanding the cultural nature of humans.

On 21 February, at the Independence Day ceremony in the University of Tartu assembly hall, the recipients of the Lennart Meri award for research and the Lennart Meri award for master’s thesis were announced. The 6,000-euro award for research went to Timo Aava for his doctoral thesis in history, and the 4,000-euro award to Hegle Pärna for her master’s thesis in law.

On 21 February, the recipient of this year’s Ernst Jaakson memorial fund scholarship was announced at the ceremony of the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia in the University of Tartu assembly hall. The 18,000-euro scholarship was awarded to Kristjan Kalam, a Research Fellow in Materials Science at the Institute of Physics.

The University of Tartu organised the largest number of international conferences in Tartu last year, and 13 of them won recognition.

On the initiative of the University of Tartu Move Lab, a new physical education syllabus was created and implemented in Estonian schools at the beginning of this school year.

The University of Tartu language award 2024 is given for contribution to preserving and developing Finno-Ugric languages through creating a digital translation engine.

The University of Tartu research award 2024 went to an extraordinary discovery that in industrial hot spots, anthropogenic air pollution causes snowfall and reduces cloud cover.
