Alar Karis has significantly strengthened cooperation between the state and the fields of education, research and culture, and has been a committed advocate for a society founded on knowledge, creativity and democratic values.

As a scientist, university leader, museum director, public official, and president of the Republic of Estonia, he has helped promote the understanding that education, research, and culture are not merely outcomes of societal development but its most important prerequisites. He has consistently stood up for academic freedom, evidence-based decision-making, cultural identity, and an open society.

As a professor and rector of the University of Tartu, Alar Karis gave a significant boost to the university’s development and enhanced the international competitiveness of higher education and research in Estonia. His leadership was guided by the firm belief that the university is not just an educational and research institution but also one that brings society together: creates knowledge, initiates public debate, and connects Estonia with the international research and intellectual community.

As the director of the Estonian National Museum, and later, as the auditor general and the president, he helped bring together the finest traditions of research and public life. He has been a visible supporter of cultural life and an active participant in it, a respected dialogue partner for researchers, creative professionals and the wider public, helping foster a common understanding of the values that shape Estonia’s development.

The activities of Alar Karis are characterised by balance, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to build connections between people, disciplines and countries. His work has enhanced the international visibility of Estonian research and higher education and helped reinforce the understanding that Estonia’s success is founded on knowledge, culture, and openness to the world.
