Good practice of wearing decorations

The University of Tartu Grand Medal, the Medal, the Badge of Distinction, the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu”, the Johan Skytte Medal and the University of Tartu Star of Appreciation may only be worn by the person on whom the decoration has been bestowed.

Honorary decorations are generally worn only at ceremonial events of the university or ceremonial state, social and personal occasions. All the decorations in the original size, either separately or in combination with other decorations, or the rosettes of the medals may be worn with white tie or black tie and on dark suit, on festive and evening dress, and on national costume if worn as festive attire (see figure 1).

One decoration at a time may be worn on a business suit or dress: the rosette of the Grand Medal or Medal, or the Badge of Distinction or the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu” (see figure 2). The original-size Grand Medal and Medal are never worn together with their rosettes.

Decorations are worn on the chest, to the left of the midline. When several decorations of the University of Tartu are worn at the same time, they are arranged in two rows to the left from the midline (see figure 1). In the top row are decorations awarded to individuals outside the university in the following order: the Johan Skytte Medal and the Star of Appreciation. In the bottom row are decorations awarded to members of the University of Tartu in the following order: the Grand Medal, the Medal, the Badge of Distinction, the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu”.

The good practice of wearing decorations of the University of Tartu only applies to the honorary decorations of the University of Tartu; a person wearing other decorations should follow the recommendations of the organisation who bestowed them. When honorary decorations of the University of Tartu are worn together with national decorations, the wearer should follow the recommendations of the Office of the President of the Republic, available on the website president.ee.
