Professor of International Political Theory Viacheslav Morozov is suspected of action against the Republic of Estonia

The Estonian Internal Security Service has notified the university that they have started an investigation against Professor of International Political Theory Viacheslav Morozov, who is suspected of action against the Republic of Estonia. The employment contract with Viacheslav Morozov was terminated at his own request on 11 January.

Head of Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies Kristiina Tõnnisson has informed the staff and students of the institute. The institute has prepared an overview of Viacheslav Morozov’s teaching and research work in progress, which will be reorganised.

Important facts:
  • The Estonian Internal Security Service (ISS) arrested Viacheslav Morozov on 3 January 2024 and informed the university of his detention and the suspicions against him.
  • Employment contract with Viacheslav Morozov was terminated at his own request on 11 January.
  • The ISS has disclosed that Morozov is suspected of acts against the state. The University of Tartu has no reason to question the decisions of the Estonian Internal Security Service.
  • According to ISS public statement, the suspicions include cooperation with Russian intelligence services over a span of several years.
  • ISS has claimed that Viacheslav Morozov met with his contacts during his visits to Russia, shared information, and received payments from Russian intelligence services.
